I saw an interesting article comparing the evolutionary purpose for the male adn female orgasm - while the purpose of the male one is fairly obvious, this is not the case for the female one. One theory was that if women enjoy sex more that they will do it more and hence have more offspring but I am not convinced that women who have more orgasms have more sex. Thoughts?

Let's Talk About Sex
by cofty ina old thread was bumped recently in which posters from 9 years ago raised objections to evolution basesd on personal incredulity regarding sexual reproduction.. i remember an elder in one of my old congregations saying something to the effect that "how could evolution be true, if men evolved before women...blah blah" you get the picture.. i have refreshed my memory of a chapter in nick lane's excellent book "life arising - the ten greatest inventions of evolution" and put together a summary.
it would be great if others would add to it - cantleave, adam, tiktaalik, s&r, bohm et al?.
here is my starter focusing on the problem with non-sexual selection.... if the driving force in evolution is the struggle of selfish genes to pass on copies of themselves to future generations, then sex seems counter-productive.

Or is the subtext that the WBTS through the years 'used imperfect reasoning when holding itself as appointed to act as Jah's mediator because we are imperfect humans but Jah has forgiven us and you should too'? Thoughts?

Taken to its logical extreme people who believe in God also believe something came from nothing, that something being Jah. As I asked my wife: 'If Jehovah created everything, who created Jehvoah?' This got her thinking - I prompted her - 'It is the same creator as the creator of Allah, all the Hindu gods and all the pagan gods?' She looks suspicious - I say 'the answer is man '- which draws a scowl.

Earthly Organization Reset - What Would You Do?
by committeechairman ini've been reading and posting comments on this site for a while now (about a year) and the comments i see indicate that many who are here have good ideas about what would be required if either (1) jehovah's witnesses were completely reset and the whole framework of belief and organization were started over or (2) if a completely new organization were built.
this assumes, of course, that you believe god exists and that he is interested in human affairs (i know some of you don't).
it also assumes that you do not believe that the "heritage" of jehovah's witnesses has such great weight and importance that it precludes putting all beliefs and procedures on the table to examine them and change them if necessary.. given all this, what do you believe should be the beliefs and organization of true worship today?

In the spirit of this post, maybe:
centralise leadership in one person for a more coherent message - none of this namby pamby decision making by committee - why would Jah inspire eight when it is more efficient to inspire one - Rutherford was right! over time that person could change doctrine sucht that the membership refer to Him (it msut be a Him) as Jehovah to make it clearer exactly who is meant when Jehovah is refered to in the literature.
more draconian penalties for those who transgress - shunning is for wimps - how about electric shock treatment to get those having apostate thoughts back on tract
more effective marketing - with the help of the NSA build an algorithm that can interrogate all data on the Internet looking for those who are really down and depressed and work out how to puich their buottons and then spam them mercilessly unitl they start participating in meetings (which could also be run as an endless Skype chat room)
Sorry to take the piss but if something is

What a stupid statement : 'How could anyone not believe?' That would be like an Atheist saying: 'How could anyone believe?' Niether believing or not believing are so obviously correct as to make either proposition reasonable.

NJY - I understand your concern to protect your kids from religious indoctrination and keep them away from cults and make sure that they can make up their own minds. I am fully onside with that - I fight a guerrila war with my missus every day to protect my son from the WBTS cult and to help him develop critical thinking skills. I am winning that war overwhelmingly. Celebrating normal holidays has been an important weapon in my arsenal. I can't help but feel your attitude to Christams remians heavily influenced by your Witness background. I htink you have created a bit of a strawman by seeing celebrating Christamas as a slippery slope to being sucked into another cult. There is no evidence to support this risk. It is a bit like the domino theory the US used as a pretext to fight the Vietnam War. I think the main point about Christmas that churches lament is that it has lost its religious significance to a great extent. Anyway you are entitled to your opinion but to my mind Xmas is harmless fun provided you don't get sucked in by commercialism and end up in January wallowed in debt.

NJY - I understand your point. There is a lot of crass commercialism around Xmas and the retailers play this very hard in their advertising ande make a lot of money from it and many families end up in debt because of a sense of oblkigation to give more gifts than they can afford - I get all this. And as an Atheist who understands that it is a holiday based on the Winter Solstice that was adopted by Christianity I don't see it as having great religious significance. But as a Winter Solstice celebration that focuses on the family it is special. IMO the reason the WBTS is against it is to both isolate Witnesses and give them a sense of superiority. You have a clean slate so you can design your family Xmas celebration from scratch - take what you like and leave the rest as you seem to be doing - and it will help your kids in relating to other kids to join in the Xmas spirit. Cheers and Merry Xmas

notjustyet - you think you are doing your kids a favour by not celebarating Xmas - you think you are jeopardizing their minds - really? Have you asked them whether they would like to celebrate Xmas? You can make it a family day where you show appreciation of each other by giving gifts (not going over the top) -the religious content is what you want to make it. Go on - give it a go for your kids' sake...I feel pity for my wife that she was robbed of the opportunity to experience the joy of Xmas as a kid and continues to resist, because of WBTS indoctrination - you no longer have that excuse...

Some religious values and ethics are beneficial to individuals and society (love thy neighbour) but religious affiliation (in creating and reinforcing conflict) and religious doctrine and organisations can be detrimental - for example I think the Catholic legacy on the Philippines is extremely detrimental.
